For the purposes of this category, the "Indian subcontinent" is defined in accordance with the World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions. That is, the geographic region is defined as including the following areas:

- Bangladesh [BAN]
- East Himalaya [EHM], comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Bhutan, Darjeeling and Sikkim
- India (region) [IND], comprising political India except those parts placed in the WGSRPD units of Assam, East Himalaya, Lakshadweep (the Laccadive Islands) and West Himalaya
- the Laccadive Islands (Lakshadweep) [LDV]
- the Maldives [MDV]
- Nepal [NEP]
- Pakistan [PAK]
- Sri Lanka [SRL]
- West Himalaya [WHM], comprising Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand (or Uttaranchal)
