Als Reduktionismus bezeichnet man die wissenschaftstheoretische Position, die von der Zurückführbarkeit von Theorien, Begriffen, gesetzmäßigen Zusammenhängen oder Phänomenen ausgeht. Der Reduktionismus kann dabei als generelles Wissenschaftsprogramm vertreten werden oder auf einen bestimmten Geltungsbereich eingeschränkt bleiben. Ein Reduktionismus im ersten Sinne ist dem Ideal der Einheitswissenschaft verpflichtet, demgemäß alle Phänomene der Welt im Prinzip durch die grundlegendste Wissenschaft, die in der Mikrophysik gesehen wird, zu erklären seien. Ein Reduktionismus im zweiten Sinne kann zwischen verschiedenen Wissenschaftsbereichen vertreten werden, etwa zwischen Psychologie und Neurobiologie, zwischen Chemie und Physik oder Ethik und den Verhaltensbeschreibungen.
