Die Dreiecksgeometrie lässt sich oft nicht eindeutig von der Trigonometrie abgrenzen, die sich zu einem großen Teil mit Dreiecksberechnungen beschäftigt. Die Trigonometrie ist durch die Verwendung der trigonometrischen Funktionen (Sinus, Kosinus, Tangens, Kotangens, Sekans, Kosekans) und die Betonung des rechnerischen Aspekts gekennzeichnet, während sich die Dreiecksgeometrie allgemein mit Eigenschaften allgemeiner und spezieller Dreiecke befasst.
