Die Kirchen dieser Konfessionsgruppe sind alle aus der Erweckungsbewegung der katholisch-apostolischen Gemeinden entstanden. Vereinfacht gesagt, geht es den hier zusammengefassten Kirchen um den (wiedererweckten) apostolischen Dienst bzw. das Amt und ein Modell der urchristlichen Gemeinde mit dem Anspruch, dieses als ökumenisches Modell der Christenheit anzubieten.

Die Konfessionsgruppe der apostolischen Gemeinschaften (oder auch „Familie der apostolischen Gemeinschaften“) stellt ein sehr breites Spektrum von Lehrauffassungen dar.

Die sich auch als apostolisch bezeichnenden Pfingstgemeinden und -kirchen gehören historisch nicht zur Gruppe der Apostolischen Gemeinschaften.
