Članice Ujedinjenih nacija, od kojih su sve suverene države iako nije nužno da su sve suverene države i članice UN-a

Suverena država, ili samo država, je država sa definiranom teritorijom koja ima unutrašnji i vanjski suverenitet, stalno stanovništvo, vladu, nezavisnost od drugih država i mogućnost ulaska u međunarodne odnose sa drugim suverenim državama.[1][2] Također se podrazumijeva da suverena država nije podređena drugoj državi ili stranoj sili.[3][4][5] Apstraktno gledajući, suverena država može postojati i bez priznanja od strane drugih suverenih država, ali nepriznate države mogu imati poteškoće pri sklapanju sporazuma i pri uspostavi diplomatskih odnosa sa drugim suverenim državama.

Riječ zemlja se često koristi kada se misli na suverenu državu, ali ima potpuno drugačije značenje i označava geografsko područje.
