Hidroliza je hemijska reakcija u kojoj dolazi do razlaganja neke supstance u reakciji sa vodom.

Hidroliza soli

Soli slabe baze i jake kiseline

Rastvaranjem amonijum hlorida u vodi dolazi do disocijacije soli:

NH4Cl (s) + H2O (l) → NH4+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)

Po Brønstedovoj teoriji kiselina i baza NH4+ ion je donor protona i on prelazi na molekulu vode:

NH4+ + H2O → NH3 + H3O+

Ioni Cl- nemaju tendenciju da prime H+ ione jer je kiselina HCl, koja bi nastala primanjem H+ iona, jaka kiselina i u vodenim rastvorima potpuno disocirana. Usljed prenosa protona s NH4+ iona na vodu, nastupilo je formiranje H3O+ iona, nosilaca kiselosti i njihova koncentracija raste, pH vrijednost rastvora opada (pH<7) i rastvor je kiseo.

Soli jake baze i slabe kiseline

Rastvaranjem KCN u vodi, dolazi do disocijacije:

KCN (s) + H2O (l) → K+ (aq) + CN- (aq)

CN- ioni su konjugirana baza slabe cijanidne kiseline (HCN) i prema Brønstedu je to jaka baza, pa dolazi do primanja H+ iona od molekula vode:

CN- + H2O → HCN + OH-

Ioni K+ nemaju tendenciju primanja OH- iona, jer je kalijum hidroksid potpuno disociran u vodenim rastvorima (jak elektrolit). Ovaj rastvor postaje bazičan zbog porasta koncentracije OH- iona. Rastvaranjem soli nastale od jake kiseline i slabe baze (npr. NH4Cl), zbog hidrolize nastaje kiseli rastvor. Rastvor nastao rastvaranjem soli nastale od slabe kiseline i jake baze (npr.KCN) je bazičan.
