পেঙ্গুইন বুকস ১৯৩৫ সালে তৈরি হয়েছিল। এর স্রষ্টা ছিলেন স্যার অ্যালেন লেন,[২] পাব্লিশার্শের লাইনে দ্য বডলি হেড, হল একমাত্র আলাদা হয়ে যাওয়া কোম্পানি ওই বছরে।[৩] পেঙ্গুইন তাদের ১৯৩০ এর হারিয়ে যাওয়া ঐতিহ্যকে ফির্যে আনবার জন্য পেপারব্যাক ব্যবহার করে, যা খুব বেশি দামও না কিন্তু এদের মান অনেক উচ্চ। পেঙ্গুইনের সাফল্য বর্ণনা করে এদের বিশাল সংখ্যায় দর্শক বন্ধুদের সমাগম বইয়ের জন্য। পেঙ্গুইনের ব্রিতেনে একটা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভুমিকা আছে পাবলিক ডিবেটে, এদের পলিটিকাল বই, আর্টসের বই এবং বিজ্ঞানের বইয়ের মাধ্যমে।[৪]
পেঙ্গুইন বুকস এখন বিশ্বব্যাপী পেঙ্গুইন র্যান্ডম হাউস এর ছাপা, এটা তৈরি হয়েছিল ২০১২ সালে দুট কোম্পানি মিশে গিয়ে।[৫] প্রাক্তনভাবে পেঙ্গুইন গ্রুপ কে কিনে রেখেছিলেন পিয়ারসন পি.এল.সি., এটা ছিল একটা গ্লোবাল মিডিয়া কোম্পানি যারা ফাইন্যান্সিয়াল টাইমস নামেও পরিচিত ছিল,[৬] কিন্তু এটা আখন শেয়ারের মাত্র ৪৭% ধরে রাখতে পেরেছে।
