Viqlər əvvəl İngiltərədə siyasi qrup, daha sonra isə İngiltərə, Şotlandiya və Amerikada siyasi partiya adı olub. " Viq " şotland sözü "whiggamore"-un qısaldılmış formasıdır. Bu söz 1648-ci ildə Qərbi Şotlandiyada monarx I Karla qarşı çıxanlar üçün işlədilib. 1600-cü illərin sonundan etibarən kral ailəsinin artan gücünə qarşı müxalif mövqedə olanlar "Viqlər" adlanırdı. Viqlər 1850-ci illərdə proqressiv Viqlər Liberal adını götürənə qədər İngiltərə siyasətində güclü rola sahib idilər. Amerikada isə "Viqlər" termini Britaniyadan asılılığı rədd edən və ABŞ İstiqlal müharibəsini dəstəkləyənlər üçün işlədilirdi.[1]
