Isaac Newton was granted the right to bear a coat of arms by the College of Heralds in 1705; this was not in recognition of his contributions to science, but rather a political favour to his patron, Lord Halifax. Newton had to submit a genealogy to the College of Heralds, where he claimed a shared male line descent with Sir John Newton, 3rd Baronet of Barrs Court in the County of Gloucester Modern genealogical scholarship confirms that they were third cousins (see Foster, C. Therefore the coat of arms granted to him by the College of Heralds was the same as that borne by the Newton baronet: Sable, two shin-bones in saltire argent, the dexter surmounted of the sinister.
