الطحالب الخضراء هي مجموعة كبيرة من اليخضورات والتي إنبثقت منها الإمبريويات (النباتات العليا).[1] على هذا النحو، فإنها تشكل مجموعة شبه عرق paraphyletic، على الرغم من أن هذه المجموعة التي تضم كل من الطحالب الخضراء والامبريويات هي أحادية النمط الخلوي (وغالباً ما تعرف بالمملكة النباتية). وتشمل الأشنيات الخضراء السوطيات الوحيدة الخلية والمُستَعمِرة، في الغالب من ذوات السوطي لكل خلية، وكذلك مختلف الأشكال المُستَعمِرة من لمكوراتية والخيطية والأعشاب البحرية العيانية. في الكاريات، وهي أقرب أقارب النباتات العليا هناك تمايز كامل في الأنسجة. هناك حوالي 8,000 نوع من الأشنيات الخضراء.[2] كثير من الأنواع تعيش معظم حياتها كخلية وحيدة، في حين تشكل أنواع أخرى مجمعات (المستعمرات) وخيوط طويلة أو أعشاب بحرية عيانية متميزة للغاية.
