باريس عاصمة الجمهورية الفرنسية، وهي أيضًا إحدى أقاليمها، وتنقسم إلى 20 دائرة (Arrondissement). وكل دائرة مقسمة بدورها إلى أربعة أقسام، يدير كامل المدينة عمدة بلديتها، واثنان من المحافظين بمعاونة المجلس العام. تقع باريس على نهر السين، بها مطاران دوليين هما: (مطار باريس أورلي و مطار باريس شارل دو غول الدولي)، النفق الشهير الذي يربط فرنسا بإنجلترا تحت بحر المانش والذي افتتح في 15 مايو 1994 مما سهل السفر بالقطارات TGV الفائقة السرعة بين البلدين.
