مدينة الموصل هي مركز محافظة نينوى وثاني مدينة في العراق من حيث السكان بعد بغداد حيث يبلغ تعداد سكانها حوالي 1،5 مليون نسمة. تشتهر بالتجارة مع الدول القريبة مثل سوريا وتركيا. ويتحدث سكان الموصل اللهجة الموصلية (أو المصلاوية) التي تتشابه مع اللهجات السورية الشمالية، ولهذه اللهجة الموصلية الدور الأكبر في الحفاظ على هوية المدينة، وأغلبية سكان الموصل عرب سنة ينحدرون من خمس قبائل رئيسية وهي شمر والجبور والدليم وطيء والبقارة، ويوجد أيضا مسيحيون ينتمون إلى عدة طوائف وأكراد وتركمان.
