Encara que Nueva Zelanda ye un estau unitario, ye dividiu en dieciseis rechions. Once d'ellas son administradas por consellos rechionals (o mayor ran d'administración local), y cinco son administradas por autoridaz unitarias, que son autoridaz territorials (o segundo ran d'administración local) que tamién fan as funcions d'os consellos rechionals.[1][2] O Consello d'as islas Chatham ye parellano a una autoridat rechional, autorizau por a suya propia lechislación.[3]
