Die leenman het aan die koning 'n eed moes sweer dat hy die koning militêr sou steun en getrou aan hom sou wees. Die koning het as antwoord gesweer dat hy hom sal beskerm. Die leenman en sy afstammelinge het die geleende land behou totdat hulle huis (familie) uitgesterf het; daarna het die land weer na die koning teruggekeer.
