Die Samoerai (侍 of minder gereeld 士)?) was die adellike krygstand in voorindustriële Japan. Die krygstand het Japannese geskiedenis vir byna 700 jaar van 1185 tot 1867 oorheers.[1] Onder die Tokugawa regime (1600-1867), was die samoerais die hoogste van die vier stande in die Japanse samelewing. Hulle was die enigste mense wat toegelaat is om swaarde te dra. Die lang Tokugawa-vrede het egter beteken dat hulle meestal as burokate in die administrasie gewerk het.
