Niccolò Machiavelli (3 Mei 146921 Junie 1527) was 'n Italiaanse diplomaat, politiese filosoof, musikant, digter en toneelskrywer. Hy was 'n sleutelfiguur in die Renaissance-tydperk en 'n dienskneg van die Florentynse republiek. Hy werk van 1498 tot 1512 as sekretaris van die tweede Sekretaris van die Kanselier van die Republiek van Florence.[1]

Hy is veral bekend (of berug) vir een van sy korter werke, "Die vors", wat soms as 'n realistiese politiese teorie beskryf word. Beide die teks, die republikeinse "Verhandelinge oor die eerste tien boeke van Titus Livius" en "Geskiedenis van Florence" is egter eers na sy dood uitgegee. Tydens sy leeftyd het slegs sy dialoog oor "Die Kuns van Oorlog" gepubliseerde sirkulasie geniet. Geslagte sedert die sestiende eeu is aangetrokke en afgestoot deur die siniese benadering tot mag in "Die vors", "Verhandelinge" en "Geskiedenis van Florence".[2] Machiavelli se eie bedoelings word steeds heftig gedebatteer, maar, danksy sy werke, is sy naam vandag sinoniem met roekelose politiek, bedrog en die strewe na mag, ongeag die gevolge.
