Jan Buys

Jan Buys (5 September 1909 – 1985) was 'n Suid-Afrikaanse skilder wat veral bekendheid verwerf het vir sy landskapskilderye van Suid-Afrikaanse tonele.

Buys is in Rotterdam in Nederland gebore, kom in 1948 na Suid-Afrika. Sy opleiding ontvang hy van 1928 tot 1932 aan die Rotterdamse Kunsakademie en daarna in Heidelberg in Duitsland. Van 1933 tot 1939 neem hy deel aan verskeie uitstallings in Nederland (Rotterdam, Amsterdam, ’s-Gravenhage, Middelburg) en selfs Parys. Tydens die Tweede Wêreldoorlog werk hy in die argief in Rotterdam en maak historiese tekeninge van die gebombardeerde stad.

Sy werk is beïnvloed deur Nederlandse en Vlaamse meesters en deur die Italianer Amedeo Modigliani. Die landskappe herinner aan Vlaamse ekspressioniste. Buys word beskryf as die skilder van die nostalgie.

In 1949 hou Buys ’n uitstalling in Johannesburg en tot 1972 hou hy verskeie uitstallings oor die hele Suid-Afrika (Pretoria, Kaapstad, Durban) tot in Namibië (Windhoek en Tsumeb) en weer in Nederland. Sy skilderye is te siene in in o.a. die Nasionale Kunsmuseum en die Jan van Riebeeck-skool in Kaapstad, Kimberley se William Humphreys-kunsmuseum, die Tegniese Kollege in Kroonstad, Bloemfontein, Graaff-Reinet en Rotterdam se munisipaliteit.

Buys sterf in 1985 in Johannesburg.
