Clyde Tombaugh (4 Februarie 190617 Januarie 1997) was 'n Amerikaanse sterrekundige. Hy is veral bekend vir die ontdekking van die dwergplaneet Pluto in 1930, die eerste voorwerp wat ontdek is in 'n gebied wat later as die Kuiper-gordel geïdentifiseer sou word. Daarnaas het hy ook 14 planetoïede ontdek. Hy het ook ernstige wetenskaplike navorsing oor vreemde vlieënde voorwerp, of VVV's, bepleit.

Biografie

Clyde William Tombaugh is op 4 Februarie 1906 in Streator, Illinois in die Verenigde State van Amerika gebore.[1] Sy familie trek later na Burdett in Kansas, waar hy sy skoolloopbaan in 1925 voltooi. Hy wou graag verder gaan studeer, maar nadat 'n haelstorm sy familie se oeste beskadig het, was daar nie daarvoor geld nie.[2]

Op 18 Februarie 1930 ontdek hy Pluto. Tussen 1930 en 2006 is Pluto as die negende planeet van die Sonnestelsel beskou, waarna dit as 'n dwergplaneet herklassifiseer is. Na dié ontdekking het hy by die Universiteit van Kansas ingeskryf en twee grade in sterrekunde verwerf.

Hy is waarskynlik die mees vooraanstaande sterrekundige wat ooit self melding van VVV's gemaak het. Op 20 Augustus 1949 het hy onder andere verskeie VVV's in die omgewing van Las Cruces in Nieu-Mexiko waargeneem. Hy het die verskynsel as ses tot agt reghoekige ligte beskryf.

Tombaugh is op 17 Januarie 1997 in Las Cruces, Nieu-Mexiko, oorlede. Hy was byna 91 jaar oud.
