Die ligging van die Acraman-krater.

Die Acraman-krater is 'n kwaai verweerde impakkrater in die Gawlerbergreeks van Suid-Australië.[1] Sy ligging word afgeëts deur die Acramanmeer, 'n ronde, verganklike droë meerbodem met 'n deursnee van sowat 20 km. Die ontdekking van die krater en die onafhanklike ontdekking van sy ejekta is in 1986 die eerste keer in die tydskrif Science aangekondig.[2][3]

Die krater is baie verweer en sy oorspronklike grootte moet op 'n indirekte manier bepaal word. Sommige skrywers raam die oorspronklike deursnee op tot tussen 85 en 90 km,[4] terwyl ander meen dit was kleiner, dalk net 35 tot 40 km, nadar aan die grootte van die depressie waarin die Acramanmeer lê.[5] Die groter grootte sal dui op 'n energievrylating van 5,2 × 106 megaton TNT.[4]

Die impakvoorval word geraam op sowat 580 miljoen jaar gelede, tydens die Ediacarium. Dié ouderdom word nie afgelei van die krater self nie, maar van die posisie van ejekta in nabygeleë sedimentbekkens.[4]
