Abu Nidal (1937–2002) was een van die mees gesoekte en gevreesde Palestynse terroriste ter wêreld. Nidal het lughawens, vliegtuie, busse en openbare geboue aangeval en soms selfmoord-bomaanvallers hiervoor gebruik. Hy word vir 'n totaal van 90 aanvalle in 20 lande verantwoordelik gehou. Hierdie aanvalle het hoofsaaklik tussen die middel 1970's en vroeë 1990's plaasgevind. Die naam Abu Nidal beteken "vader van die stryd".[1]

Biografie

Abu Nidal is in Mei 1937 in die hawestad Jaffa, tans 'n deel van die munisipaliteit Tel Aviv-Jaffa, as Sabri al-Banna, gebore. Vanweë die Nakba (verdrywing van Arabiere uit Palestina) vlug sy familie eers na 'n kamp vir ontwortelde persone in die Gasastrook en later na Nablus. In die 1960's sluit hy by Yasser Arafat se Fatah-groep aan, wat later deel van die Palestynse Bevrydingsorganisasie sou word.

In 1974 breek Nidal van die Fatah-groep af weg, omdat hulle 'n twee-staat-oplossing nagevolg het. Hierna stig hy sy eie organisasie, genaamd die Abu Nidal Organisasie (ANO).[2]

Nidal was omstrede in Arabiese kringe. Hy is by verstek (in absentia) deur Palestynse, Libanese en Jordaniese howe ter dood veroordeel.

Op 19 Augustus 2002 is Abu Nidal dood by sy huis in die Irakse hoofstad, Bagdad, aangetref. Daar word aangeneem dat hy sedert 1998 daar gewoon het. Hy het aan leukemie gelei. Die Irakse owerhede het sy dood as selfmoord bestempel. Hulle verklaring word egter in twyfel getrek, omdat hy met skietwonde aangetref is.[3]
